The EU-Vietnam Sustainable Design Award (EVSDA), initiated by the Delegation of the European Union (EU), aims to promote and develop sustainable design activities and communities in Vietnam, contributing to the country’s inclusive and sustainable development. This initiative also aligns with one of the key priorities in the cooperation between the European Union and Vietnam.

A message from Mr. Julien Guerrier, EU Ambassador in Vietnam :

“This project reflects our ambition to develop an innovative framework that supports the process of bringing positive and creative change to life. Through this initiative, I look forward to connecting with architects, designers, artists, engineers, creatives, and innovation-driven practitioners in Vietnam—those who will build a bridge between the worlds of art and culture and the realms of science and technology.

Together, they will generate inspiring ideas that blend sustainability, practicality, and aesthetics to create meaningful impact. To ensure the success of this project, we hope to collaborate with visionary and creative minds.”

With the theme “Design for Everyday Life,” the first season of the EVSDA Award seeks to approach design solutions as an essential and increasingly significant part of modern human life.

The process of each design project includes presenting the context, researching and developing solutions, communicating and delivering them to users, gathering feedback, and continuously improving. These crucial elements contribute to the creation of high-quality products and works that elevate daily living experiences for people across the globe.

Since its inception, VOOC Design has chosen “Sustainable Design” as the guiding principle for all activities. We first approached this concept in 2011, when collaborating with interior designers from Sweden. What really impressed us was not the academic aspect, but the high quality of life and the beauty of respecting nature in the Nordic region, which is a living proof of the value that this theory brings.

  • Phase One: Experimentation

When applying the theory of Sustainable Design in Vietnam, we found it was mainly suited to manufacturing for export, serving the demands of European Union markets.

  • Phase Two: The Present

Vietnam is a part of the global supply chain, yet this achievement is not truly sustainable. Vietnamese people stand at the threshold of new choices, driven by hopes for a better future. The domestic market also reflects clear changes: people are increasingly attentive to their personal time, eager to improve their living spaces, and determined to enhance their quality of life. Others choose to embark on journeys to explore new horizons.

For any economic or production model to be truly relevant, its ultimate outcome must ensure that Vietnamese people benefit from greater knowledge, better spaces, and an improved quality of life. At this stage, we see a solid launchpad: by applying Sustainable Thinking in a systematic way, a sustainable circular economy can be established between Vietnam and the countries of the European Union.

  • Phase Three: The Future

Solutions developed in Vietnam can be expanded and applied elsewhere. If designers and solution-creators align with a global mindset, Vietnam can contribute even more to the advancement of global sustainability.

From the initial idea of creating a pair of glasses that could “ survive ” the spontaneous actions of our two years old daughter, we have developed solutions for everyday life, not only serving ourselves but also bringing practical benefits to customers in the US, Japan and Europe.

Sustainable happiness will be created by directly developing tools that help our own lives. With the support of modern technology and the craftsmanship of the Vietnamese people, we believe these elements are the key to adapting to market changes.
